One day my uncle called asking, “How would you like a free horse?” All I could think of was that my prayers had been answered, my dream had come true. Then I met Whirling High and instantly I knew I was the luckiest girl on earth! He was 17 years old at the time, a retired racehorse, a proud and majestic thoroughbred.
High had been living a life of leisure however and I was now asking him to work once again, in a manner he had never known before. I was working him every day and preparing him not for the track, but for the show ring. He wasn’t so sure that this was what he desired and he let me know by concentrating all his energy into throwing me, and anyone else, off his back. I felt sure I could win him over with love. I loved him unconditionally and if he wasn’t crazy about me that was okay because I loved him enough for the both of us. When love alone didn’t work I got tough. Then I called upon all my resources, instructors, therapists, special appliances, new methods, multiple books and tapes, and many, many hours in the barn with High.
Slowly we were getting there – together. High soon was following me around with that same love struck look in his eyes that I had from day one. We were getting first place ribbons in the ring and spending wonderful lazy days trail riding and enjoying each other.
This past summer something else happened, High began to show his age. What I first took for an even mellower disposition was turning into signs of aging. He was slowing down, losing weight, losing that spark I loved so much. It hurt to see my dear friend growing old. Upon the suggestion of the owner of another senior horse, I tried Blue Seal Vintage Senior. Within a few weeks the spark was back, he was stepping higher, gaining weight, and showing his stuff. I actually laughed out loud when he even tried to buck me off again. He’s back and I’m loving it. Thank you Vintage Senior!
